Derwent Reservoir

Where?
Heading out of Sheffield toward Manchester on Manchester Road (adjacent to Rivelin) and Snake Road, it's about an half an hour drive.
Derwent Reservoir is opposite the Ladybower, in the Peak District.

This is the right turn you take when you're driving over the ladybower.

Parking
Parking at Derwent Reservoir is everywhere. Some like Fairholmes visitors centre car park is pay and display (2hrs £2.50 or full day at £4.70)
Others however are free.
The car park we used on this occasion was Upper Derwent Valley, Derwent Overlook Car Park
Postcode for car park: Hope Valley, Derbyshire, S33 0AQ

Parking is generally always available but be aware that it is a popular location so bank holidays and summer holidays are generally very busy.

Public Transport
There is a bus stop opposite this car park and a quick search online says 273 and 274 bus route stops here.

What does this walk offer?

  • Beautiful views
  • Lots of water
  • Flat easy going trails
  • Little mud
  • Popular with other (dog) walkers
  • Easy car park

Using this car park we took the path that lead out from it taking us alongside the car park and reservoir. The path is straight forward and there's a few accessible bits for the water, which Izzy loved and it being a hot day, so did Watson! There's plenty of benches scattered around and you just keep walking straight forward until you want to turn back.

There are lead your dog signs as there is cattle on the hills and around in general, however we only saw them on the opposite side but it's worth taking note and not risking it until you know it's clear for sure.

There is a lot of different paths, but the general gist is just walking around the reservoir. Each route explores a different part of the reservoir and each comes with its own unique walk so you can spend as much or as little time exploring as you wish but it's definitely one you can always come back to and find another route. There is also the Ladybower and Howden reservoir on either side of Derwent reservoir to explore, which we will review once we do so!

There is a route from Fairholmes Visitors Centre car park that takes you up to Derwent edge, which apparently has amazing views! We will post a blog about that when we do the walk, so keep a look out! There is also a cafe at the visitors car park. Also, on the A57, there is Ladybower Inn (dog friendly hotel, S33 0AX).  We haven't eaten here but we plan to during the summer, so we will post a review when we do. For the time being visit Trip Advisors review.
